I don’t know what it is about this spring but I am absolutely annoyed by any and all clutter in my house. I am waging war on the junk! There are some areas that have been driving me crazy so I have been forcing myself to dig in and take the time to go through things. The most frustrating part about it though is that most of it is paperwork, unpacking boxes, and rearranging things to give them more practical homes. None of this work is ‘seen’ on a daily basis, but it does a lot to relax my mind and make the house feel lighter and more streamlined.
The first project I tackled was the garage. I don’t know where all of you live, but Michigan apparently has fallen leaf graveyards in their garages. I could not believe how many piles of leaves I swept out of our garage, and this is AFTER Joey and I did a sweep out about 2 months ago. I rearranged where we store things, threw out anything unnecessary, and created sections for our gardening supplies, car maintenance items and sporting goods. It took a full Saturday but man it felt so good to pull into a clean and organized garage!
The next huge task on my list was unpacking unnecessary boxes in our basement, and reorganizing/labeling our holiday decorations. Unfortunately, we still had thing in boxes from when we first moved into our first house…almost 9 years ago, that just got shuffled and reshuffled and moved into our new house. EGADS. We desperately needed to purge, and I got through about 75% of our stuff. I just need to buy some new tubs that I can label and this project will be d.o.n.e. Praise and halleluyer!
The third major task was cleaning out our pantry. I got rid of boxes for small appliances that we use all the time, moved our entertaining items to a closet in the basement and recycled approximately 340,000 grocery bags that were trying to run us out of the house. A big change I want to make this year is to get many more reusable bags that I can bring to the grocery store. I HATE the plastic grocery bags, and they’re so bad for the environment. I feel awful every time I go to the grocery store. No more! I am on the hunt for produce bags and grocery tote bags. If anyone has any good recommendations, send them my way!
Last but not least, I got my closet painted! (Have you been to The Container Store’s website and seen their closet pictures?! GO THERE NOW. You are welcome.) I just went with a simple, bright white (this one). It’s considered a contractor’s grade, but it actually a great quality. It costs about $23/gallon, and I consider that a win! I only needed about 3/4 of the gallon to get the small area done. I didn’t even get it tinted, I just used the High Hide White color that it already was. One of the employees swatched it for me and I liked how bright it was so I went with it. Sometimes avoiding a paint deck decision is the way to go! One day I want a closet like this. One day. SHE’S SO BEAUTIFUL.
