Not Quite Right

October 4, 2016

The progress on our guest room stalled out for a little bit.  I was feeling a bit uninspired, and there was something about the room that was bugging me and I couldn’t quite understand what it was.  It was driving me crazy, so I decided to walk away from it for a bit to kind of see if I could figure out what the issue was.

The bedskirt and the curtains.

I love the comforter set that I got for the room, but it didn’t come with a bed skirt.  I figured I would buy a basic white one and that would be that, problem solved.  Nope.  First off, bed skirts by themselves are expensive!  I was shocked at how high some of the prices were for those…some even being $115!  I ended up finding one at Target for $25 and thought that it would be decent and get the job done.  Unfortunately, Target let me down on this one.  It was rippled throughout the sides and looked sloppy, I had to iron it a lot before any of the wrinkles came out and it was a bit see-through, which was really irritating because you could see the bed frame under it.  It’s all set to be returned, stat, so no pictures of the naked underbelly of the guest bed…sorry!

Next were the curtains, or lack thereof.  With the darker color on the walls, this room has been begging for curtains for quite a while.  I had picked up a set and a rod for them about a month ago, but life got in the way so they never made their way to actually being installed in the room.  Joey put up the curtain rod on Saturday and I was able to get those curtains hung up.  What a difference!  Even that small change added another dose of personality to the room.  They’re white curtains with pom-poms on them and I love the little bit of texture they add to the room.

A Quick Lamp Facelift

August 1, 2016

I have had a mini project on my mind for a while that I decided to do this weekend.  I’m still trying to get everything pulled together in the guest room and end table lamps are something on my list.  I have been scouring our house looking through our boxes of stuff that we *still* haven’t fully unpacked.

It’s been almost 3 years.

Yikes.

Please tell me I’m not alone in this?

I digress.  There was a pair of lamps that we used in our old house that we liked at first but…they just weren’t that great anymore.  They felt out of style and stuffy so I figured I would at least try to coat them with some spray paint and see if that would work for the guest room so I don’t have to invest in lamps quite yet.

I ran into the hardware store and grabbed some silver paint by Rust-oleum.  There is silver nailhead trim on the headboard in that room so I figured I would try to tie that in and see if it works with the big picture.

I taped off the electrical parts of the lamp and then got to work.

I have never used spray paint before, and this stuff was super easy to use!  I put one coat on in about 2 minutes, waited about 5 or 10 minutes for it to dry down a bit and then did coat number two.

Not bad!  The paint took really well and I’m happy with it.  Are they going to work in the space?  Not sure yet, I will have to add some white shades and go from there.  If it doesn’t end up working out, I may paint them another color to see if that will work or I may use them in a different area.  We’ll see!  That’s half the fun of taking your old things and trying to make them new again!

Color for the Guest Room

July 13, 2016

Moving on to the guest bedroom! Here’s a little secret about me: I’m colorblind.  Not fully, I still see in color but sometimes I don’t catch the undertones in some swatches that I look at because I’m red/green colorblind.  That makes our paint selections quite… interesting sometimes because a color that jumps out at Joey could look bland to me or vice versa.  By the end of the trip to get paint, we usually end up staring at one another in the store and leave empty handed!

I have recently discovered Sherwin Williams’ app called the ColorSnap Visualizer and man, this thing helps me out a TON.  It’s so nice to actually be able to see the colors I like virtually displayed in a whole room because that way, I can get a better idea of the tones since it’s shown on a bigger scale.

I was playing around with colors and settled on a color called Cocoa Whip.  Here’s what it looks like in the app:

It’s definitely a lot darker than I thought it would be, but I still like it!  The room is not that big, so I want it to feel cozy but not too smashed.  I love how it makes the white trim pop, giving the room crisp, fresh lines.

The color also has to work well with Gale Force, since they’re going to be right up against each other.  I want the transition to be natural, not like I’m walking out of one house and into another.  For now, this is the front runner!  If I still like it by payday on Friday, it’s probably going to be a green light.

Any particular Sherwin Williams colors you love that would complement my hallway?  Do share!
